P-EBT Update

Background: In addition to keeping people away from work, shelter-in-place orders across the country have kept children away from school for nearly two months. This has been particularly devastating for the millions of children who receive free and reduced-price meals every day through the National School Lunch Program.

In response, the Families First Coronavirus Response Act authorized the implementation of Pandemic EBT (P-EBT), a federal initiative to provide students age 3-18 that currently receive free and reduced-price meals with a replacement food benefit to pay for groceries while schools are physically closed.

This new, temporary program provides a lump sum food benefit to families to replace benefits they would otherwise have received during the school year.

P-EBT update for July 2020:

  • Minnesota has expanded the P-EBT benefit to include some pre-K students ages 3-5. To be eligible for P-EBT, the student must have been enrolled in a school district pre-K program and receiving free or reduced-price meals prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The application deadline has been extended until July 31, 2020.
  • Families will receive Summer P-EBT, an additional $100 food benefit per eligible child, in August.
